The Oakridge Eagle boys soccer team made their annual trip to the Hanover-Horton Invitational over the weekend for the 4th year in a row. The trip started out with most of the team going to watch the University of Michigan woman’s soccer team defeat UC Riverside 4-0 on Friday night at U of M soccer stadium.
Then Saturday afternoon they made drove over to Hanover-Horton High School where they first took on Hillsdale. The Eagles won their first game with a 4-1 victory over the Hillsdale Hornets. Cruz Rodriguez got the Eagles on the board off an assist from Mads Christensen in the 8th minute. Andrew Dial made it 2-0 with a goal in the 15th minute with the assist going to Fletcher Chase. The Hornets put away a PK in the 31st minute to make the score 2-1 at half. In the second half the Eagle defense tightened up and the offense opened up the lead. First with a goal by Troy Beebe that was assisted by Brenden Thiele, and then the last goal scored by Damian Herrera on an assist from Kyle Bollin. Bradley Jones had 6 saves as the Eagles out shot the Hornets 12-6 with Bradley Jones getting the win in net. This sent the Eagles into their final game of the day sitting at 1-0. Hillsdale who had beaten Hanover-Horton 3-0 earlier in the day finished the tournament 1-1.
In the Eagles second contest of the day they played the host team the Hanover-Horton Comets. The Comets have a very young squad with only 3 seniors and one junior. In this contest the Eagles came out with a big first half lead with two goals by Cruz Rodriguez, and single goals by Andrew Dial, Damian Herrera and Troy Beebe. The assists went to Brenden Thiele, Cruz Rodriguez, Mads Christensen, Kyle Knight and Nick Toney. In the 2nd half the Eagles opened up their lead and finished off the Comets. Goals in the second half were scored by Cruz Rodriguez, Fletcher Chase and Lewis Kim had the final tally that ended the game. Monty Cerchiori had two assists and Damian Herrera had the other. Bradley Jones and Ronnie Schafer combined for the shutout with Schafer making two saves. The Eagles out shot the Comets 16-2.
This gave the Eagles their second straight championship in the Hanover Horton Invitational.
